Our horses come from a variety of circumstances. Sadly it is often the report of a neglect or abuse situation and we are called to intervene. On other occasions the council, rangers or other equine associations contact us about abandoned horses. And then, of course, there is the sad situation where people find themselves unable to keep their loved horses due to circumstances beyond their control.
It all depends on the horse. If a horse arrives in an emaciated or mentally abused state it can often be months or even years before they are ready to go to their "fur-ever" home.
Each horse is assessed on arrival, vet checks are performed and they are provided with the care and individual attention they need to gain both their mental and physical health.
The adoption process is carefully handled to ensure the person adopting and the horse are a perfect match for each other. There is an initial information form we request to be completed and that is followed up with a site inspection to ensure the environment is suitable.
Following the successful adoption, monthly follow ups are performed to ensure the success of the adoption process.
For humane and correct care, EVERY horse needs these things even if they are not ridden.
- Feed & supplements Per week - $15 minimum
- Hoof care (trimming only) Every 4 - 6 weeks $45
- Hoof care (full set of shoes) Every 4 - 6 weeks $110
- Worming Every 12 weeks $20
- Dental work every year for mature horses, or every 6 months for older horses $120
- Vaccinations Every year $40
Boarding or Agistment:
- Do It Yourself Board Weekly $40
- Part Board Weekly $65
- Full Board Weekly $150
Other Expenses:
- Saddle Fitting Prior to purchase of saddle & check up if problems arise $150
- Chiropractic work Should the horse show signs of stiffness/soreness $90
- Bowen/message therapy Should the horse show signs of stiffness/soreness $60
Absolutely not! We welcome all levels of experience. And provide onsite, "hands on" training to provide a safe environment at all times. Our volunteer teams work in groups so that maximum safety is ensured. On your first day you receive induction training on all the aspects of working involved. You'll be introduced to the horses and we assess your degree of experience and confidence. From there we work with you to make sure your time at Hunter Horse Haven is enjoyable and productive.
We usually have a maximum of 20 horses in our care at any one time with a waiting list as well. Ideally we like to have an emergency "space" always available so that we can accept urgent surrenders easily.
